Cryogenic Operation on Pony

Last week this pony underwent a cryogenic operation by veterinary surgeon, Andrew from the Senlac Veterinary group in Battle.

The pony had a melanoma on its left hind thigh about the size of a walnut and a very ugly black-looking lump it was. Andrew recommended the operation as it caused least stress to the pony and would result in a minimal scar with minimal possibility of infection during healing.

Cryogenics is the procedure of freezing the infected lump using liquid nitrogen that virtually kills the infection, a virus, without doing damage to surrounding tissue. There may have to be a repeat operation and the same spot if the melanoma doesn't completely go at first try.

Results of such an operation that takes nearly half an hour overall, are excellent. Every minute or so the vet feels the lump to ensure that surrounding tissue is not being affected by the very low temperature.

Brownbread always insists on the very best procedures for the rescued animals that ensures minimum stress whatever the cost.
